SLRA Expands Rural Road Development to Support Agricultural Growth

The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) continues to expand road infrastructure across Sierra Leone as part of its commitment to improving connectivity and supporting economic growth.

One of the key projects currently underway in the southern region is the Tinkoko–Kpetema–Mattru Jong Road, which is expected to significantly improve transportation between farming communities and regional markets. When completed, the road will reduce travel time, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and enhance access to essential services for residents in surrounding communities.

The project is being implemented under the leadership of the Director General of SLRA, Engineer Alfred J. Momodu, whose administration continues to prioritize the development, rehabilitation, and maintenance of road infrastructure nationwide. The contract for the Tinkoko–Kpetema–Mattru Jong Road has been awarded to Pavifort Construction Company, with construction expected to span approximately two years.

In addition to new road construction, SLRA is also undertaking major rehabilitation projects across the country. Notably, reconstruction works are ongoing on the Mabang – Moyamba – Gbambatoke Junction Road, a key corridor spanning approximately 86 kilometres that connects several communities within the region.

Maintenance and repair activities are also being carried out on critical routes to ensure safe and reliable transportation. These include improvement works along the Makeni – Magburaka Road and repairs near the Makambo Bridge, where sections of the roadway previously required urgent attention.

SLRA continues to prioritize road safety and traffic management in both urban and rural areas. In rural communities, road projects are focused on improving access to markets, health facilities, and service centres. In urban centres such as Freetown, ongoing works include the replacement of damaged concrete slabs along major roads and the construction of a temporary bypass at the Mathehun Bridge to maintain traffic flow while rehabilitation works are in progress.

These initiatives form part of SLRA’s broader mandate to improve road conditions, enhance mobility, and support sustainable development across Sierra Leone.
